Summer school student Aspiring author Ramziddin Mansurov says that attending the Language Academy summer school in 2014 has made him more determined to be an accomplished writer. The 22 year-old from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, wrote his first book titled ‘Book of Heroes’ early last year and wanted to come to the UK to get some feedback. “I wrote a book in English last year and I wanted to show it to a native speaker and get some reviews on it,” explained Ramziddin. “In the spring of 2014, I saw an essay contest organised by the British Council and the University of Central Lancashire on Facebook saying that one lucky winner would get the chance to study at the Language Academy in the summer for two weeks. I took my chance and won. Therefore I had the chance to visit the Language Academy and show my book.” The combination of learning both inside and outside of the classroom is one of the summer school’s strengths according to Ramziddin, and was something he found helped to improve his English. “The Language Academy helped me with their new way of teaching in that they combine theoretical teaching with a practical background. For example, a study of the environment using English words was followed with a visit to a recycling centre. That was something new for me,” he said. The dedication of the teachers at the school is another thing Ramziddin points out as being key to enhancing the summer school experience. “I had awesome teachers there. They are really interested in teaching. Their dedication and attention to every student fascinated me. It’s only thanks to them that I had such a magnificent summer.”
Summer school student& Pre-sessional English The need to improve her English and a love of Harry Potter brought current pre-sessional student Hiroko Hajima to the UK. The 20 year-old from Yamaguchi, Japan, is currently looking to develop her English skills at UCLan before returning to her hometown university to complete an English Literature degree. “I chose the course because I’m currently studying English Literature in Japan and wanted to improve my English,” explained Hiroko, who is a big fan of the Harry Potter franchise. “I haven’t decided what my dream job would be yet but I like talking in English to people so I hope to find a job in which I will regularly use English.” “As well as currently being enrolled on the pre-sessional course, Hiroko also attended the Language Academy’s summer school in 2014. Living in the UK and constantly hearing the English language being spoken is something she feels is essential in order to make progress. “My listening skills have improved because I have had a lot of opportunities to listen to English whilst living here. At first, when I went shopping the staff spoke very quickly so I couldn’t understand but now it is not as bad,” she said. Some of the teaching techniques have surprised Hiroko about studying in England but claims she is enjoying getting involved with the new ways of learning. “We have lots of discussions in class which we do not have in Japan. It is a new style of studying for me but I enjoy the discussions and like to get involved.”
SUMMER SCHOOL STUDENT Uzbek student Nazokat Nazarova feels that making new friends from all over the world is the best part of the summer school experience. The 21 year-old said: “I have only positive memories about the UK. I have a lot of friends which I made on the course despite the fact I was only there for two weeks. I often meet my friends from Uzbekistan and speak to the others on Facebook.” “I got to spend a lot of time and have fun with my new friends. We all lived like one big family.” Nazokat currently studies Foreign Economy and Area Studies in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and came to the summer school to improve her English and explore the country she had always wanted to visit. “I came to the summer school because it was a chance to improve my English and it has always been my dream to see the UK, a country which I've heard and read about so much.” “I think it is not easy to work with students from so many different countries yet in spite of this teachers were very friendly, understanding, tolerant and polite. “The summer school was fantastic and unforgettable and a very useful experience in my life.” What some of our 2016 Teachers Said
SUMMER SCHOOL STAFF TESOL teacher Amy Dewhurst has taught at the Language Academy’s summer school for the past two years. She is currently working in Toledo, Spain, teaching English to Spanish adults and hopes to return to the summer school at UCLan in 2015. What were your highlights of the 2014 summer school? Every day definitely had its highlights although my main highlight throughout the whole of the summer school was getting to know my students, both in and out of the classroom. Seeing their confidence in speaking English and their knowledge of British culture improve daily was very rewarding. Playing bubble football and riding rollercoasters at Blackpool Pleasure Beach with them could be classed under “highlights” too! What did you enjoy most about working for the Language Academy? Every week’s lessons and activities were based around a different theme so there was a lot of variety in and out of the classroom. As every student is different and every student learns in different ways, the aim was to provide the students with many different tools to enable them to progress and acquire a higher level of English. Also, very importantly, the relationships and general atmosphere between the teaching team and the students was great! How beneficial do you think the summer school is to helping students improve their English skills? I think that the UCLan summer school provides a perfect balance of learning in the classroom practising the four main skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening), followed by the practical use of English outside the classroom with different and enjoyable real-life situations. At the same time, students can do whatever they choose to do in their free time and really make the most of their time in England. Which countries/cities had you worked at before teaching at UCLan? I have worked for the UCLan summer school for the past two summers and hope to join the team again for summer 2015. During my time as a TESOL teacher I have taught in Paris, Hong Kong, Thailand and, whilst doing my MA in TESOL and Applied Linguistics with UCLan, I also worked part-time with pre-sessional courses at UCLan. SUMMER SCHOOL STAFF English teacher Paul Rothery worked at the Language Academy summer school in 2014. Paul shares his highlights of last year’s summer school below, which include the popular ‘adrenaline week’! What were your highlights of the 2014 summer school? I think my highlights were teaching students from further afield than Europe. At the time this was extremely interesting for me. The way we taught was quite special also in that we taught functional English, meaning students were able to put into practice on the different excursions what we had taught. The 'adrenaline week' was a personal favourite - teaching students about roller coasters and theme parks before going to Blackpool Pleasure Beach! How beneficial do you think the summer school is to helping students improve their English skills? In terms of its benefits, I think they are quite clear. It appears that many of the students before coming to the Language Academy were comfortable with grammar and reading activities but rather weaker in their communication skills. The Language Academy puts learners in a situation where they have to use English, but not in a daunting way- rather in a fun situation. Which countries/cities had you worked at before teaching at UCLan? Before working at UCLan, I had worked in Spain for two years. I then decided to do my masters’ degree there, got the award for best dissertation and started working for the Language Academy. What are you currently up to? I'm now working for a partner university, UCLan-Hebei, in China.
